The U.S. Coast Guard has launched a significant maritime border security surge, deploying additional resources along America’s waterways following a leadership shakeup. The initiative comes after executive orders from the White House aimed at strengthening border security.

Admiral Kevin Lunday has taken over as acting commandant, replacing Admiral Linda Lee Fagan, who was removed from her position. Admiral Fagan, the first female uniformed leader of any U.S. Armed Forces branch, was reportedly dismissed over concerns that her focus on diversity initiatives had eclipsed pressing security priorities.

On Wednesday, President Trump signed an executive order eliminating "diversity, equity, and inclusion" (DEI) practices across federal agencies, signaling a broader shift in federal policies. While official details regarding Admiral Fagan’s removal remain limited, the Coast Guard has confirmed her departure internally.

Acting Commandant Lunday reaffirmed the service’s commitment to its mission, stating, “The U.S. Coast Guard is the world’s premier maritime law enforcement agency, vital to protecting America’s maritime borders, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.”

As part of the surge operation, the Coast Guard will deploy additional cutters, aircraft, boats, and specialized units to strategic maritime regions. Key areas of focus include Florida’s southeastern waters, addressing potential mass migration from Haiti and Cuba, as well as high-priority zones around Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories. Enhanced security measures will also target the maritime border between the U.S. and Mexico, spanning the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

The expanded initiative represents a coordinated effort with the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. It seeks to intercept illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and potential terrorist activities before they reach U.S. shores.

By bolstering resources in these critical areas, the Coast Guard aims to reinforce maritime security and safeguard national sovereignty during a period of heightened focus on border protection.
