American Energy: Crowley’s LNG Milestone in Puerto Rico

Crowley Maritime Corporation has reached a groundbreaking milestone in U.S. maritime and energy history with the deployment of the *American Energy*, the first U.S.-flagged liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier dedicated to transporting domestically sourced LNG to Puerto Rico. This landmark move is part of a strategic partnership with Naturgy, aimed at strengthening Puerto Rico’s energy security and addressing its escalating power demands.

The *American Energy* is an impressive vessel, stretching 900 feet long and capable of carrying 130,400 cubic meters of LNG—equivalent to approximately 34.4 million gallons per voyage. Originally built in 1994, it boasts a CAP 1 rating, a testament to its top-tier safety and operational standards. At full capacity, one voyage from the *American Energy* can supply enough energy to power about 80,000 homes for an entire year. The ship operates under the U.S. Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996, which allows certain foreign-built vessels constructed before the law’s enactment to obtain coastwise endorsements.

Through a multi-year agreement, Crowley is tasked with transporting LNG from the U.S. mainland to Naturgy’s facility in Penuelas, Puerto Rico. This partnership secures a reliable and cost-effective energy route for the island and contributes to the reliability of its energy grid. Jon Ganuza, General Manager of Supply and Wholesale Markets at Naturgy, remarked that the collaboration not only strengthens Naturgy’s global LNG footprint but also provides Puerto Rico with a dependable, long-term energy solution.

Crowley’s relationship with Puerto Rico spans over 70 years, and the company continues to demonstrate its commitment to the island’s development. Operating the Isla Grande cargo terminal in San Juan, Crowley has been a key player in the delivery of over 94 million gallons of LNG annually through its Penuelas terminal. The addition of the *American Energy* reinforces Crowley’s dedication to enhancing Puerto Rico’s energy infrastructure and economic stability.

Utilizing LNG as a fuel source offers significant environmental advantages, particularly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fuels like diesel. The introduction of the *American Energy* is in line with global efforts to transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. It reflects an industry-wide shift toward environmentally responsible operations, while also supporting the economic and energy security goals of Puerto Rico.

In summary, the deployment of the *American Energy* by Crowley and Naturgy marks a critical advancement in maritime operations and energy logistics. This venture not only strengthens Puerto Rico’s energy resilience but also underscores the strategic role of LNG in modern energy systems. It is a compelling example of how innovation, partnership, and forward-thinking leadership can converge to solve today’s most pressing energy challenges.
