In a pivotal advancement for sustainable maritime innovation, Fincantieri and Viking have announced plans to build the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship. This ambitious project is set to redefine the future of cruise travel, highlighting the industry’s shift toward low-emission, clean-energy propulsion technologies. Slated for delivery in late 2026, the vessel will become a hallmark of next-generation shipping, merging luxury and ecological responsibility.
Constructed at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard in Italy, the vessel—tentatively named Viking Libra—will utilize a hybrid propulsion system combining liquefied hydrogen and advanced fuel cell technology. This will allow for silent, emission-free sailing in ecologically sensitive zones. Weighing over 54,000 gross tons and measuring 239 meters in length, the cruise ship will house nearly 1,000 guests in a vessel designed with energy efficiency and environmental performance at its core.
The move comes amid mounting pressure from global regulators and stakeholders to decarbonize the shipping industry. Hydrogen propulsion, still in its early stages of commercial application, represents a promising avenue to meet IMO targets for greenhouse gas reductions. As infrastructure develops and costs fall, hydrogen is expected to play a leading role in future propulsion strategies, influencing not just cruise liners but also cargo, ferry, and offshore support vessels.
