Two bulk carriers collided in China’s Changjiang River, resulting in a fuel oil spill and damage to one vessel’s hull.
The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. Singapore time on December 30, involving the Singapore-registered YANGZE 22 and the Japan-registered VEGA DREAM.
The YANGZE 22 sustained hull damage, leading to the release of approximately nine metric tonnes of fuel oil into the river. The vessel is currently anchored at Hengsha East Anchorage, where damage assessments are ongoing.
Cleanup operations are being led by the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration (MSA), with the support of multiple vessels. Authorities have reported that the situation is under control.
Both vessels remain stable, and no injuries among the crew have been reported.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has launched an investigation into the incident and is maintaining close communication with the YANGZE 22’s management company as well as the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration.
