Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), a prominent shipping company based in Singapore, has recently placed an order with CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., located in Nansha, China. The contract is for four dual-fuel liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, each with a capacity of 60,000 cubic meters. Valued at approximately $340 million in total, these vessels are set to be delivered between 2027 and 2028, with each ship priced at around $85 million.
This order is particularly significant as it marks a revival in demand for this specific vessel size, which had seen limited activity over the past decade. These medium-sized LPG carriers are primarily used in niche markets, especially in South America, and fewer than 20 of such vessels are currently operational worldwide. Industry experts believe EPS's decision aligns with a strategy to modernize its fleet. The company presently operates three LPG carriers—Helsinki, Denver, and Tokyo—delivered in 2009, suggesting the new vessels may replace aging tonnage.
CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding has also been making strides in other areas, securing contracts for innovative designs such as 25,000-cbm and 41,000-cbm ammonia dual-fuel LPG and liquid ammonia carriers. These projects highlight the shipyard's advancing capabilities in the gas carrier sector.
Overall, the shipyard has enjoyed a strong year, with orders for 56 vessels spanning 12 different types and a total value exceeding 20 billion yuan. This success reflects CSSC Huangpu Wenchong's growing influence in the global shipbuilding market.
