Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen Marine Corp has placed an order for six ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) with Hanwha Ocean Co. Ltd. The vessels, each with a capacity of 24,000 TEU, will be built at Hanwha’s Geoje shipyard in South Korea, with delivery scheduled for 2027.

Evergreen’s latest order aligns with its ongoing fleet expansion strategy to enhance efficiency and maintain competitiveness in the global container shipping market. The investment underscores the company’s commitment to modernizing its fleet, focusing on fuel efficiency, operational flexibility, and environmental compliance.

Key Specifications of the Newbuilds:

• Shipbuilder: Hanwha Ocean Co. Ltd.

• Capacity: 24,000 TEU

• Delivery Timeline: 2027

• Owner: Evergreen Marine Corp (Taiwan) Ltd.

• Vessel Class: Ultra-Large Container Ship (ULCV)

While the exact propulsion and environmental technology details remain undisclosed, it is expected that these vessels will incorporate next-generation fuel-efficient engines and eco-friendly technologies to comply with IMO emissions regulations.

For Hanwha Ocean, this contract marks a significant milestone in strengthening its footprint in the competitive container shipbuilding sector. Following its acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), Hanwha has been aggressively pursuing new orders to secure a leading position in South Korea’s shipbuilding industry.

This order comes as part of Evergreen’s broader strategy to replace older tonnage and maintain a competitive edge in the Asia-Europe and transpacific trade lanes. The addition of these six vessels will further reinforce Evergreen’s operational scale and cost efficiency, helping the company mitigate market fluctuations and enhance its global network.

As container shipping continues to evolve with decarbonization targets and digitalization trends, major players like Evergreen are expected to prioritize efficiency and sustainability in their fleet renewal programs. With Hanwha Ocean securing this major contract, the South Korean shipbuilder strengthens its position as a key player in the high-capacity container vessel market.
