Briggs McCriddle

INTERCARGO is delighted to announce that John Xylas will take over as Chairman on January 1, 2025. With nearly four decades of experience in the maritime industry, Mr. Xylas brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to one of the most dynamic sectors of global shipping. His extensive career includes serving as President and CEO of Ariston Navigation Corp, a position he has held since the company’s founding in 2002. Under his leadership, Ariston Navigation has become a respected name in the dry bulk sector, known for its operational excellence and modern fleet management.

Mr. Xylas’s achievements extend far beyond his corporate roles. He has been a driving force behind several successful initiatives, such as the TMA Bulk Pool and Axiom-Womar, which have delivered innovative solutions for dry bulk transportation. His service on the board of the Union of Greek Shipowners (U.G.S.) since 2006, including as Treasurer, reflects his unwavering commitment to advancing quality shipping and ensuring the industry's continued success.

As Mr. Xylas takes the helm at INTERCARGO, the global dry bulk shipping market is poised for significant changes. Industry forecasts for 2025 suggest moderate growth in dry bulk trade volumes, driven by increasing demand for iron ore, coal, and grains in emerging markets. However, the sector continues to face challenges such as fluctuating freight rates, decarbonization pressures, and heightened scrutiny from port state control authorities.

Detention rates for bulk carriers have been a growing concern, with a noticeable uptick in inspections targeting safety management systems and environmental compliance. In 2024 alone, bulk carriers accounted for nearly 25% of all detentions globally, with deficiencies frequently identified in areas such as fire safety, structural integrity, and pollution prevention equipment. These issues highlight the need for stronger adherence to international regulations and proactive fleet management.

INTERCARGO will undoubtedly benefit from Mr. Xylas’s expertise in addressing these challenges. His deep understanding of commercial dynamics, coupled with his experience managing modern bulk carriers, positions him to lead the organization in fostering greater safety and operational standards. Under his guidance, INTERCARGO will continue to advocate for the interests of dry bulk operators while promoting sustainability and reducing detention rates through education and best practices.

Looking ahead, the industry faces a dual challenge: meeting growing demand for bulk commodities while navigating stringent regulatory requirements for emissions and vessel safety. With Mr. Xylas at the helm, INTERCARGO is well-equipped to lead the charge, ensuring the dry bulk sector remains resilient and adaptable in the face of evolving global trends.

As the new Chairman, Mr. Xylas will focus on fostering collaboration between industry stakeholders, improving port state control compliance, and supporting the adoption of innovative technologies that enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental performance. His vision will ensure that INTERCARGO continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of the dry bulk industry.
