On February 13, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with U.S. President

Donald Trump at the White House to strengthen bilateral relations, focusing on trade,

defense, and energy cooperation. The discussions led to several key agreements with

significant implications for the maritime and energy sectors.

A pivotal outcome of the meeting was an agreement to enhance energy collaboration. India

committed to increasing its imports of U.S. oil and gas, aiming to reduce the trade deficit and

bolster energy security. President Trump stated. The prime minister and I also reached animportant agreement on energy that will restore the United States as a leading supplier of

oil and gas to India." This move is expected to elevate the U.S. to a primary energy supplierfor India, fostering deeper ties in the energy sector.

The leaders also addressed defense cooperation, with President Trump announcing plans to

enhance military sales to India, including the eventual provision of F-35 fighter jets. This

initiative aims to strengthen India defense capabilities and promote stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, both nations agreed to collaborate on maritime security to

ensure open and secure sea lanes, vital for international trade.

Trade discussions were a focal point, as both leaders agreed to initiate talks aimed at

resolving tariff disputes and enhancing market access. India expressed its intention to

reduce tariffs on select U.S. goods, while the U.S. considered reciprocal measures. These

negotiations aim to create a more balanced trade relationship, benefiting industries in both

countries.

Another significant development was the agreement to collaborate on the India-Middle

East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). This ambitious project seeks to connect India to

Europe via the Middle East through an integrated network of ports, railways, and undersea

cables. The IMEEC is poised to enhance trade routes, streamline supply chains, and foster

economic growth across multiple regions.

These agreements underscore the commitment of both nations to deepen their partnership,

with far-reaching implications for the maritime and energy sectors. Enhanced energy trade,

bolstered defense cooperation, and strategic infrastructure projects are set to redefine the

U.S.-India relationship, promoting economic growth and regional stability.
