MSC Orders 24K TEU Container Carriers at Hengli Heavy Industries

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping line, has commissioned Hengli Heavy Industries to build ten ultra-large, dual-fuel container ships, each with a capacity of 21,000 TEU. These advanced vessels are scheduled for delivery by 2027 and represent a significant milestone for both MSC and the shipyard.

This marks Hengli Heavy Industries’ debut in constructing full container ships and dual-fuel vessels, reflecting the company’s growing shipbuilding capabilities. Hengli, which was restructured from the bankrupt STX Dalian and began operations in January 2023, has quickly expanded its portfolio. Its order book now includes over 30 vessels, comprising container ships, large oil tankers, and marine engines.

Following this initial order, MSC placed another contract with Hengli Heavy Industries in December 2024 for ten LNG dual-fuel container ships, each with a capacity of 24,000 TEU. Valued at approximately $2.3 billion, this additional order demonstrates MSC’s commitment to fleet modernization and sustainability. These larger vessels are expected to be delivered starting in 2028.

MSC’s strategic investments highlight its focus on maintaining market leadership while enhancing fleet efficiency and environmental performance. By adopting LNG dual-fuel technology, MSC underscores its dedication to reducing emissions and supporting global sustainability goals.

For Hengli Heavy Industries, these substantial contracts signal its rise as a competitive force in global shipbuilding. The company’s ability to secure and deliver such significant orders showcases its readiness to meet the demands of leading shipping companies in the evolving maritime sector.
