Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has placed an order with China’s Penglai Zhongbai Jinglu Ship Industry for eight advanced container ships, each with a capacity of 11,000 twenty-foot equivalent units. The order reinforces MSC’s commitment to fleet expansion and its strategy to adopt more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly vessels. These ships are expected to be equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems, allowing them to operate on both conventional marine fuels and liquefied natural gas, aligning with industry efforts to reduce emissions.
MSC has been actively investing in modern vessel designs to meet stringent environmental regulations and improve operational efficiency. The addition of these 11,000 TEU ships further strengthens its position as the world’s largest container shipping company, ensuring it remains competitive in an evolving maritime landscape.
The new ships are scheduled for delivery over the coming years, with their deployment expected to enhance MSC’s ability to serve key global trade routes. The demand for fuel-efficient and technologically advanced container ships continues to rise as shipping companies strive to balance cost efficiency with sustainability commitments.
By expanding its LNG-powered fleet, MSC is taking proactive steps toward reducing its environmental footprint while meeting the increasing demand for cargo transport. As the industry moves towards decarbonization, investments in dual-fuel technologies highlight MSC’s dedication to long-term sustainability and operational excellence.
