Saipem Secures $683 Million in Contracts for Carbon Storage and Transportation Projects

Briggs McCriddle

Saipem, a global leader in engineering and construction, has been awarded two significant contracts totaling approximately $683 million as part of the UK’s East Coast Cluster initiative. These projects represent a major step forward in carbon transportation and storage, a critical component of the UK’s decarbonization strategy. The East Coast Cluster, focused on reducing CO₂ emissions from key industrial regions like Teesside and the Humber, aims to securely store captured emissions beneath the North Sea. Spanning 30 months, Saipem’s role will include the development of state-of-the-art offshore facilities designed to ensure safe and efficient CO₂ transport and storage, cementing its position as a key partner in the UK’s push for net-zero emissions.

These contracts further highlight Saipem’s global leadership in supporting the energy transition. Beyond its work in the UK, Saipem recently collaborated with PT Meindo Elang Indah on an offshore EPCI project for BP Berau Ltd. in Indonesia. This initiative, part of BP’s Tangguh LNG expansion, focuses on integrating natural gas production with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). With a dual focus on cleaner energy supply and emissions reduction, the project underscores Saipem’s capability to deliver sustainable solutions in diverse markets.

Saipem’s growing portfolio of projects reflects its commitment to tackling global climate challenges through innovative technologies and complex engineering solutions. These contracts not only showcase Saipem’s expertise in offshore infrastructure but also underscore its dedication to advancing sustainability. As the energy sector evolves, Saipem remains at the forefront of global efforts to reduce emissions and drive the transition to a greener future.
