Royal Boskalis B.V. has unveiled plans for the Windpiper, a groundbreaking subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel poised to become the largest of its kind. With a remarkable cargo capacity of 45,500 metric tons, the vessel is set to redefine offshore wind project capabilities.

Scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2026, the Windpiper will double Boskalis’ SRI capacity when combined with its existing fleet of three vessels, further cementing the company’s leadership in specialized offshore services. This development coincides with the rapid global expansion of offshore wind energy.

Measuring 227 meters in length and 40 meters in breadth, the vessel boasts over 31,000 kW of power. Key features include a moonpool and an inclined fall pipe system, both essential for safeguarding wind turbine foundations on the seabed.

In an environmentally conscious move, Boskalis is converting an existing vessel rather than building a new one. This sustainable approach minimizes environmental impact and allows faster deployment, aligning with the company’s commitment to responsible innovation, reassuring stakeholders of its ethical practices.

The Windpiper’s massive capacity is distributed across two cargo holds, optimizing efficiency for long-distance projects in areas such as the North American East Coast, the Baltic Sea, and the Southern North Sea. This design reduces the number of trips needed, resulting in lower emissions and enhanced cost-effectiveness.

Equipped with DP2 certification and over 100 single-occupancy cabins, the vessel is tailored for extended offshore operations in demanding conditions. It ensures comfort and safety for both crew members and client representatives, providing a secure environment for all involved.

The Windpiper will debut in Northwest Europe, where it will play an important role in advancing the region’s offshore wind initiatives. Its introduction underscores Boskalis’ dedication to meeting the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions while maintaining industry-leading standards, inspiring a future powered by clean, renewable energy.
