The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has teamed with Warner Bros. Discovery to launch Good To Know, an educational video series showcasing how nuclear science addresses critical global challenges.
The debut installment includes five one-minute films produced by the IAEA video team in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery's editorial experts. These short features simplify complex topics, demonstrating the safe use of nuclear science to combat issues such as microplastics in oceans, the global cancer burden, food insecurity, water scarcity driven by climate change, and industrial contamination. Filmed in diverse locations such as Monaco, India, Austria, Costa Rica, and the Czech Republic, the series educates viewers on the real-world applications of nuclear science and its potential to tackle global challenges.
Future installments will delve deeper into nuclear science’s role in sustainable development and climate change mitigation. Topics will include carbon sequestration in coastal areas, ocean acidification, and eco-friendly pest control methods. The series also highlights IAEA initiatives addressing plastic pollution, drought, and hunger, showcasing the organization's pivotal contributions to sustainable solutions.
The films were developed with the support of the IAEA's twelve nuclear sciences and applications laboratories, a unique United Nations entity driving advancements in nuclear techniques worldwide. To provide additional context, a three-minute overview of the laboratories is also available for viewers.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the transformative potential of nuclear science, from improving agricultural practices to enhancing cancer treatments and protecting ecosystems. “As climate change accelerates, it’s essential for people to recognize the solutions science can offer,” he stated.
Najat Mokhtar, Head of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the importance of sharing the IAEA’s groundbreaking research with a global audience.
