NEW: America’s 8th LNG Export Facility Achieves First Production

Briggs McCriddle

Today, Venture Global announced a significant milestone: its second LNG facility, Plaquemines LNG, located in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, has reached first LNG production. With a 20 MTPA (million tons per annum) nameplate capacity, the project achieved this feat just 30 months after its Final Investment Decision (FID), making it one of the fastest greenfield LNG projects in the world to do so—matched only by Venture Global’s first facility, Calcasieu Pass.

Once fully operational, Plaquemines LNG will rank among the largest LNG facilities globally, further solidifying the United States’ position as the world’s top LNG exporter.

A Historic Achievement for US Energy

Venture Global’s CEO and Co-Founder Mike Sabel credited the accomplishment to the company’s dedicated team and innovative approach:

“Reaching first LNG at Plaquemines at this pace will enable the United States to remain the top exporter of LNG in the world. Between current and planned facilities, Venture Global is prepared to invest $50 billion in energy projects across the United States, creating jobs, supporting local economies, and strengthening global energy security.”

Unique Approach Accelerates LNG Supply

Plaquemines LNG’s unique modular construction and commissioning strategy allows the facility to begin exporting LNG while work continues on the remaining 36 trains and associated facilities. This phased approach unlocks additional US LNG supply years ahead of traditional timelines, making it a critical player in alleviating supply constraints in tight global markets.

The Final Investment Decision for Phase One of the project was reached in May 2022, with Phase Two following in March 2023. The speed and efficiency of the project have been praised as a geopolitical asset for the United States, bolstering energy reliability and supporting global allies during an era of heightened demand and market instability.

Strengthening America’s Energy Leadership

Venture Global’s continued investments demonstrate the growing importance of US LNG in supporting global energy security, especially in light of geopolitical uncertainties and delayed international projects. Plaquemines LNG’s success reflects the country’s leadership in energy innovation, infrastructure, and export capability, promising to meet the rising energy demands of global markets for years to come.

Stay tuned as the remaining phases of this landmark facility come online, further enhancing America’s impact on the global LNG market.
