Payment information. If you become a paid subscriber, payment is processed by Stripe, Inc. and, where applicable, through Substack’s billing systems. We do not collect or store your full credit card, debit card, or bank account details. Payment processing is governed by Stripe’s privacy policy.

Information collected automatically. When you open our emails or visit our pages, we and our service providers may automatically collect certain technical and usage information, including your IP address, approximate geographic location, device and browser type, email open and click activity, pages viewed, and referring source. This information is collected through cookies, pixels, and similar technologies as described in Section 6.

Information from third parties. We may receive limited information from the platforms we use to operate the Publication (such as Substack) and from analytics providers, including aggregated engagement and audience metrics.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Deliver newsletter issues, welcome emails, transactional messages, and Publication updates.

  • Operate, maintain, and improve the Publication and our content.

  • Understand readership through aggregated and anonymized analytics such as open rates, click rates, and geographic distribution.

  • Share aggregated and de-identified audience metrics with current and prospective sponsors and partners.

  • Process and manage paid subscriptions.

  • Communicate with you about your subscription and respond to your inquiries.

  • Detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, security incidents, and technical issues.

  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms and policies.

3. Legal Bases for Processing (EEA and UK Subscribers)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data on the following legal bases:

  • Consent: when you subscribe to receive our emails. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing.

  • Performance of a contract: to provide and manage a paid subscription you have purchased.

  • Legitimate interests: to operate, secure, analyze, and improve the Publication, and to share aggregated audience data with sponsors, provided these interests are not overridden by your rights.

  • Legal obligation: to comply with applicable laws and lawful requests.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share information only in the following limited circumstances:

Service providers. We share information with trusted third-party service providers who process data on our behalf to operate the Publication, including Substack (hosting and email delivery), Stripe (payment processing), and Google Analytics (usage analytics). These providers are authorized to use your information only as necessary to provide services to us.

Sponsors and partners. We share only aggregated, anonymized audience information (such as total subscriber count, geographic distribution, and industry breakdown) with sponsors and partners. We never share your individual email address or personal information with sponsors or advertisers.

Legal and safety. We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to comply with a law, regulation, subpoena, court order, or lawful government request; to enforce our terms and policies; or to protect the rights, property, safety, or security of Gosships LLC, our subscribers, or the public.

Business transfers. If Gosships LLC is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, sale of assets, or bankruptcy, subscriber information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will require that any successor honor the commitments in this Privacy Policy or notify you of any material change.

5. Substack Platform

This Publication is hosted on Substack. Substack’s own privacy policy (substack.com/privacy) governs data collected through its platform, including cookies, account data, and analytics. We encourage you to review Substack’s privacy policy, as its practices are outside our control.

6. Cookies and Analytics

We and our service providers use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies to operate the Publication, remember preferences, measure engagement, and understand how readers interact with our content.

We use Google Analytics to collect anonymized data about page views, approximate geographic location, and reading behavior. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Substack may also set cookies as described in its privacy policy. Most browsers allow you to refuse or delete cookies through your browser settings, though some features may not function properly as a result.

7. Sponsorship and Advertising Data

We may share aggregated audience demographics, such as subscriber count, geographic distribution, and industry breakdown, with sponsors and partners for the purpose of advertising and sponsorship arrangements. This information is aggregated and de-identified and does not identify you individually. We never share individual subscriber information with sponsors or advertisers.

8. Data Security

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security, and you provide information to us at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Gosships LLC disclaims liability for any unauthorized access to or use of your information that occurs despite our reasonable safeguards and is beyond our reasonable control.

9. Data Retention

We retain your email address and subscriber information for as long as your subscription is active or as needed to provide the Publication. If you unsubscribe, we remove your email address from our active mailing list. We may retain limited information as necessary to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and enforce our agreements. Data held on the Substack platform is retained in accordance with Substack’s data retention practices.

10. International Data Transfers

Gosships LLC is based in the United States, and our service providers may process and store your information in the United States and other countries. If you access the Publication from outside the United States, you understand that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. Where required by law, we and our service providers rely on appropriate safeguards, such as Standard Contractual Clauses, for international transfers of personal data.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority. [CONFIRM WITH COUNSEL: if Gosships LLC has no establishment in the EU or UK but offers the Publication to, or monitors, subscribers there, GDPR Article 27 and the UK GDPR may require appointing an EU representative and a UK representative, whose names and contact details would then be listed here.]

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, you have the right to: know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose; request access to and deletion of your personal information; correct inaccurate personal information; and not be discriminated against for exercising your rights. We do not sell your personal information for monetary consideration. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties, and we are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.

15. Do Not Track

Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” signal. Because there is no consistent industry standard for responding to these signals, we do not currently respond to them. We will continue to monitor developments in this area.

16. Data Breach Notification

In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you and the relevant supervisory authorities as and when required by applicable law.
