The global shipping industry has taken another significant step toward sustainability as CMA CGM celebrates the delivery of its latest vessel, the CMA CGM Esculiar. Built by HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea, this 2,000 TEU-class vessel is the final installment in a groundbreaking series of ten LNG-powered ships.
With a length of 204.29 meters and a width of 29.6 meters, the CMA CGM Esculiar boasts a design optimized for hydrodynamic and aerodynamic performance. The vessel features an almost inverted straight bow with an integrated bow bulb, an innovation that reduces drag and improves fuel efficiency. According to reports, these design improvements result in a 15% reduction in fuel consumption per trip, marking a substantial achievement in operational efficiency.
The vessel is powered by a 12 MW MAN dual-fuel LNG engine, allowing it to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels. Beyond its LNG capabilities, the CMA CGM Esculiar is designed with future fuels in mind. It can accommodate bio-LNG derived from bio-waste, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 67%, and it is convertible to e-methane, a synthetic fuel produced from decarbonized hydrogen, capable of achieving an 85% reduction in equivalent CO2 emissions.
This series of LNG-powered vessels represents CMA CGM’s ambitious commitment to sustainability. As part of its goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the company is embracing advanced propulsion technologies and alternative fuels to significantly reduce its environmental impact. The CMA CGM Esculiar and its sister vessels are a testament to this forward-thinking strategy.
HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, the shipbuilder behind this innovative fleet, has further strengthened its reputation as a leader in constructing environmentally friendly vessels. By successfully delivering these state-of-the-art ships, the shipyard has demonstrated its ability to integrate advanced engineering solutions that meet the industry's growing demand for sustainability.
The CMA CGM Esculiar is more than just a vessel—it represents the potential of collaboration between shipowners and shipbuilders to drive innovation and efficiency in the shipping industry. As global trade continues to evolve, such partnerships will play a crucial role in creating a cleaner, greener future for maritime transport.
