Why Did OFAC Blacklist The Insurers Iran Built?

Iran's own insurance regulator built one, its economy ministry the other, which takes Bitcoin. OFAC blacklisted both Wednesday. They cover seizures Washington says Iran itself creates.

Washington has now sanctioned the counterparty, not just the toll. An owner who pays to cross Hormuz is dealing with a blocked entity, and a clause published in London six days earlier discharges his hull insurers in the same moment. Neither instrument makes an exception for coercion.

The paperwork landed before the meter restarted. On Wednesday the US Treasury designated two Iranian firms set up to offer commercial ships protection for the run through the Strait of Hormuz. Read the parentage before the sanctions language. One firm was established by Iran’s own insurance regulator. The other was developed by Iran’s Ministry of Economy, takes Bitcoin, and was pushed to a social media audience by a financier Washington has designated twice in thirteen years. The peril they cover is seizure, in a strait Iran's Revolutionary Guard says it controls.

🛢️ The Story

Sanctions usually chase the ship. This one went after the policy, and in doing so it put a name to something the trade has circled since April without saying out
